How To Care For Your Bird of Paradise Houseplant

Bird of paradise (or Strelitzia Nicolai when in trouble) plants are known for their striking, exotic flowers. Unique patterned leaves are a strong feature on this plant which is hardy, adaptable and will love a sunny spot in your home. Which is a rare feature in most houseplants. Everything else I’ve dealt with will burn in that scenario. So, what else do you need to do?

Here's a brief guide to caring for this beautiful tropical plant:

Light
Bird of paradise plants can do well in bright, direct light. It will be just fine in a bright, indirect light spot - it just won’t grow a fast. If you are a plant weirdo like me, it will love a grow light if you happen to have one.

Water
Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot. Check the soil moisture by sticking your finger about an inch into the pot. If it feels dry, you can water the plant. Do not leave in standing water, allow the water to drain out the bottom of the pot.

Soil
A well-draining potting mix is essential. It has roots that will not like being too wet or in standing water, but it still needs a base level to thrive. Coco coir, perlite, zeolite, vermiculite, activated charcoal are all good elements. You may find it under soil suited for Calathea or Maranta plants.

Temperature and Humidity
Bird of paradise plants prefer warm temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C). They also enjoy high humidity. If your home's air is dry, you can increase the humidity by misting the plant regularly or placing it on a pebble tray filled with water.

Fertilising
Feed your bird of paradise plant with a balanced fertiliser during the growing season (spring and summer).

Troubleshooting
* Yellowing leaves: This could be a sign of overwatering. Allow the soil to dry out more between waterings.
* Brown leaf tips: This is often caused by low humidity. Mist the plant more frequently or use a humidifier.
* Lack of flowering: Ensure your plant is receiving enough light and is not being overwatered.
