How To Care For Your Ficus Robusta Houseplant

Ficus Robusta, also known as the Rubber Tree Plant or Ficus Elastica, is a popular houseplant with its large, glossy leaves. Easy to care for with a long lifespan, I've found the only danger to these plants is overwatering and over-caring for them. Keep them in a stable environment, with decent light and you'll have a plant that will live for a long time. One time when I was selling some nice young ficus plants at The Barras, someone told me they've had one for 30 years and it has gotten so big they use  it as a Christmas Tree! Follow this guide and you too could have a ficus like that.

Light
Ficus Robusta prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight, as this can scorch its leaves. A spot near a north-facing window is ideal. Less sunlight means it will grow slower.

Water
Ficus Robusta prefers consistently moist soil but should not be overwatered. Check the soil moisture by sticking your finger about an inch into the pot. If it feels dry, you can water the plant. Use lukewarm water to avoid shocking the roots - don't use cold water straight from the tap! Let it sit and air out overnight ideally. Feed your Ficus Robusta with a balanced liquid fertiliser during the growing season (spring and summer).

Soil
A well-draining potting mix is essential for Ficus Robusta. You can use a pre-made potting mix specifically formulated for aroids or create your own by combining peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite.

Temperature and Humidity
Ficus Robusta prefers warm temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C). It is relatively tolerant of low humidity but can benefit from occasional misting.

Pruning
Ficus Robusta can be pruned to maintain its shape or to encourage new growth. Simply pinch back any stems that are becoming too long.

Troubleshooting
* Yellowing leaves: This could be a sign of overwatering or underwatering. Check the soil moisture and adjust your watering schedule accordingly.
* Brown leaf tips: This is often caused by low humidity. Mist the plant more frequently or use a humidifier.
* Slow growth: Ensure your plant is receiving enough light and is not being overwatered.
