Bring Us Your Empties (And Get £1 Off Your Next Candle)

Let's be honest. You’ve burned through your Bothy Smoke or Highland Rain, scraped out the last bit of wax, and now that perfectly good glass jar is sitting in a cupboard waiting to magically become "useful" one day. We all do it.

Well, it’s time to clear out your cupboards. Introducing the S&S Jar Return Scheme: bring your empty S&S candle jars back to our stall at The Barras, and we’ll knock £1 off your next candle purchase.

Here is exactly why we are doing it, and what happens to your jars once you hand them over.

Why we’re doing it

When it comes to the 3 Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), Reuse is the absolute king.

Recycling glass is brilliant, but the truth is it requires a massive amount of energy to melt the glass down and refine it into something new. Reusing a jar skips that entirely. It is a zero-energy solution.

Plus, we know exactly what it's like living in a Glasgow tenement flat. Sometimes the glass recycling bin on the street is overflowing, or you just don't have easy access to one. We want to make it as easy as possible for you to get rid of your empties responsibly (and save a bit of cash while you're at it).

What happens to the jars?

Your returned jars are going straight back to work in the S&S studio. We will clean them up and use them for our behind-the-scenes scent testing, recipe development, and for creating the demo "sniffer" candles we keep at the stall.

A very important note: We will never refill a used jar and sell it to another customer. Aside from the fact that our insurance company would probably have a meltdown, glass naturally weakens after being subjected to the intense heat of a burning candle. For strict safety reasons, every single candle you purchase from us will always come in a brand-new, perfectly safe jar. Your empties just get to live out their retirement helping us make a mess in the workshop! And we need more than you imagine, for each sale batch you see in The Barras, we likely made 4-5 testers of each one trying to get the perfect hot throw.

The Small Print

Right now, this scheme is only available in person at The Barras stall. Trying to figure out the shipping logistics of posting empty glass jars back and forth across the country without them smashing is a headache we aren't quite ready for! We may look into expanding this to our online store in the future, but for now, it is a local perk.

So, round up your empties, pack them in your tote bag, and we will see you at the weekend!
