A Guide to Areca Palm (Dypsis Lutescens) Care: The Ultimate Houseplant Gym Rat
Share
You know the Parlour Palm? Well, this is its cousin that actually goes to the gym, drinks all the filtered water, and just generally has a bit more oomph. The Areca Palm (or Butterfly Palm, if you want to be fancy) is a gorgeous, lush plant that brings serious tropical vibes and feathery fronds to any space. It’s a fantastic air-purifier and an instant mood-booster, making you feel like you should probably be lounging in a hammock nearby.
While they are generally easy-going, Areca Palms have a few specific tastes—especially when it comes to hydration. Here is our friendly, no-fuss guide to keeping this magnificent palm looking vibrant and fabulous.

The Golden Rules of Areca Palm Care
-
Light: Bright, Indirect, and Never Sunburnt Your Areca Palm loves light, but it’s not a fan of intense, direct sun—especially that harsh afternoon glare. Direct sunlight is like going on holiday without sunblock: it will scorch those beautiful fronds, leaving them yellow and brown. Place it near a sunny window (south or west-facing is great!), but either use a sheer curtain or pull it back a few feet so the light is bright, but filtered. Low light will cause it to grow slowly and turn a bit pale, so bright is best!
-
Watering: Moist, Not Swampy (But Please, Don't Forget Her) The Areca Palm is a tropical drama queen when it comes to water. It likes its soil to be consistently moist during the growing season (spring/summer), but definitely not soggy or sitting in a puddle—that’s a one-way ticket to root rot.
The key is to water thoroughly when the top inch or two of soil feels dry to the touch. Let the water run all the way out the bottom (that's the drainage 'pump' working!). If you let it dry out hard, as we've learned, it will throw a fit and the tips will go crispy!
S&S Secret Tip: These palms can be sensitive to the fluoride and salts in regular tap water. If you keep getting brown tips, try giving it rainwater or filtered water. It's a tiny bit extra, but your palm is worth it!
-
Humidity: Time for a Spa Day Hailing from Madagascar, this palm thrives in high humidity. Your average UK home can be a bit dry for its liking, which usually shows up as brown, crispy leaf tips (the plant equivalent of dry skin). To combat this:
-
Mist Regularly: Give the fronds a light spritz a few times a week.
-
Group Therapy: Place it near other plants; they release moisture and create a little humid microclimate.
-
Pebble Tray: Sit the pot on a tray of pebbles filled with water (make sure the pot's base isn't sitting in the water).
-
-
Soil & Feeding: Fuel for Those Fronds Use a rich, well-draining potting mix. Because it's a fast grower when happy, feed your palm with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser once a month during spring and summer. Stop feeding entirely during autumn and winter when its growth slows down.
Troubleshooting Your Areca Palm
-
Brown, Crispy Tips: The most common issue! It means either low humidity (see above for solutions) or a sensitivity to tap water chemicals/salt buildup. Try switching to filtered water.
-
Yellowing Fronds: Typically an early sign of overwatering (leading to potential root rot). Check the soil. If it’s soggy, hold off on watering until it dries out properly. Can also be a sign of insufficient light—so make sure it's bright enough!
-
Fronds Dying Back Completely (Brown): Usually happens if the soil was allowed to dry out too much, or if the plant has been exposed to a cold draft. Palms are tropical softies, so keep them away from cold blasts!
-
Removing Old Fronds: As the plant grows, old fronds will naturally yellow and turn brown, usually at the bottom. Wait until they are mostly brown, as they are still providing energy to the plant, then snip them off cleanly at the base.
Embrace the tropical charm, treat it to some filtered water, and give it all the bright light, and your Areca Palm will be the handsome, feathery focal point of your home.
