How to care for your Calathea Rufibarba (Furry Feather Calathea)

The Calathea Rufibarba, affectionately known as the Furry Feather Calathea, is a delightful houseplant that brings a touch of softness and unique texture to your indoor jungle. Its long, slender leaves, with their velvety undersides and subtle purplish hues, make it a true conversation starter.

Light This Calathea prefers bright, indirect light. Think of the dappled sunlight beneath a rainforest canopy. Direct sunlight will scorch those delicate leaves, so keep it away from harsh afternoon sun. An east or north facing window is ideal.

Water Keep the soil consistently moist, but never soggy. Rufibarba enjoys a good drink, but hates sitting in water. Water when the top inch of soil feels slightly dry. Use room temperature, filtered or rain water if possible, as it’s sensitive to the chemicals in tap water.

Soil A well-draining, peat-based potting mix is crucial. You can also mix in some perlite or orchid bark to improve drainage and aeration. This will help prevent root rot.

Temperature and Humidity Rufibarba thrives in warm, humid environments. Aim for temperatures between 18-27°C (65-80°F). Humidity is key! Use a humidifier, pebble tray, or regular misting to keep the air moist.

Fertilising Feed your Rufibarba every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser. Cut back on feeding during the autumn and winter months.

Pruning Generally, pruning isn't necessary. Simply remove any yellowing or brown leaves to keep your plant looking its best.

Troubleshooting

• Brown leaf tips: This is often a sign of low humidity or dry soil. Increase humidity and check the soil moisture regularly.
• Curled or drooping leaves: This can indicate underwatering, low humidity, or even temperature stress. Check your watering routine and environmental conditions.
• Faded leaf colour: Insufficient light can cause the leaves to lose their vibrant colour. Move the plant to a brighter spot (avoiding direct sun).
• Pest problems: Keep an eye out for spider mites and mealybugs. Regular checks and prompt action will keep your Rufibarba healthy.
