For those who love the idea of a fern but want something a bit more interesting than the standard green feather-duster look.
The Blue Star Fern is a brilliant oddball. Instead of delicate, tiny leaves, it features elongated, wild-looking fronds that grow in deep, wavy shapes. It gets its name from its incredible matte, silvery blue-green hue, which brings a completely different, frosty colour palette to your indoor jungle.
Unlike your typical fern, this one grows from a thick, creeping, fuzzy root system called a rhizome that sits right at the top of the soil. It is full of texture, structural, and makes a fantastic statement piece.
How to keep it happy:
-
Light: Bright, indirect light is best. It will tolerate a slightly shadier spot, but direct, blazing sun will absolutely scorch those lovely blue-green fronds.
-
Water: Keep the soil consistently, slightly moist, but never leave it sitting in a puddle. The golden rule for this plant: Always water the soil around the edge of the pot. Never pour water directly onto the furry rhizomes in the centre, as they are prone to rotting if they stay wet.
-
Humidity: It is a fern, so it absolutely craves high humidity. It will thrive in a naturally steamy bathroom or a bright kitchen. If it's going in a living room, it will need regular misting to keep it happy.
Troubleshooting:
-
Crispy brown tips? The air in your flat is too dry, or you let the soil dry out completely. Give it a thorough drink and up the humidity immediately.
-
Pale or washed-out fronds? It is likely getting blasted by too much direct sunlight. Pull it back from the window so it only gets indirect rays.
Pet Safety: 100% Pet Safe. Completely non-toxic, so you don't have to panic if your cat decides to have a chew on those wavy leaves!
