Calathea Dottie

We are always completely honest with you on the stall: Calatheas have a reputation for being massive divas. But when a plant looks as incredibly striking as the Calathea Dottie, you absolutely make the effort. It features deep, moody, almost black-burgundy leaves, bordered and striped with a bright, painted-on hot pink. It is a total showstopper that brings serious contrast to a sea of standard green houseplants.

Like the rest of its prayer plant family, the Dottie is a mover. As the sun sets, you will see it fold its dark, patterned leaves straight up for the night, showing off the vibrant purplish-red undersides.

How to keep it happy:

• Light: Bright, indirect light is essential here. The dark foliage needs it to keep those pink neon stripes popping, but direct, blazing sun will scorch and bleach the delicate leaves in no time.

• Water: Calatheas like their soil to be consistently slightly moist, but never soggy. Wait until the top inch of soil is dry before watering. The golden rule for these divas: they absolutely despise the chemicals in cold tap water. Leave the water sitting out overnight before using it on her. 

• Humidity: This is a tropical jungle plant, so it demands high humidity. Keep it well away from roasting radiators or cold draughts, and give it a regular misting or group it with other plants to keep the surrounding air nice and steamy.

Troubleshooting:

• Crispy brown leaf edges? The absolute classic Calathea tantrum. It means the air in your flat is far too dry, or it is rebelling against your tap water. Up the humidity and switch to rainwater immediately.

• Curling leaves? If the leaves are curling inward like little tubes, the plant is desperately trying to conserve moisture. It usually means it is parched and begging for a thorough soak.
