The Luxurious Plant That Feels Like Velvet
If you're looking to add a truly luxurious, textural moment to your plant collection, stop right here. The Calathea Warscewiczii, or Jungle Velvet Calathea, is an absolute showstopper and a sensory experience. Its enormous, lush leaves are dark green and soft to the touch, literally feeling like rich, velvety fabric (hence the name!). The unique pattern features a lighter green "fishbone" effect that runs down the centre of the leaf, adding amazing contrast.
As with its Calathea siblings, this plant is a Prayer Plant, meaning its leaves move up and down in a little daily dance. And for a final flourish, flip the leaf over to reveal a vibrant, deep burgundy underside. This is a bold, high-end plant that looks like it belongs in a five-star rainforest retreat.
Why You'll Love It:
-
Velvet Touch: Those huge, soft, velvety leaves are simply irresistible.
-
Epic Scale: A true statement piece with some of the biggest leaves in the Calathea family.
-
Contrasting Colours: The dramatic dark green top and plush burgundy underside are pure drama.
-
Leaf Movements: Catch the movement as it performs its nightly 'prayer'—it’s alive!
Care Tips at a Glance:
-
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to keep that velvety texture and bold pattern vibrant. Keep it out of direct sunlight!
-
Watering: Keep the soil evenly and consistently moist. It's a thirsty plant and will let you know if you let it dry out! Filtered water is recommended.
-
Humidity: Absolutely requires high humidity to protect that delicate, soft foliage from crispy edges. Humidifier recommended!
-
Toxicity: Like all Calatheas, it's non-toxic and pet-friendly.
