If you love a bit of moody drama but want a houseplant that will not throw a tantrum, this is exactly what you need.
Forget the old, boring descriptions. The Peperomia Red Canyon is an absolute knockout of a plant. It gets its name from its incredible, deeply grooved leaves that look like crinkled little landscapes. Add in those rich, dark burgundy and ruby red tones, and you have a plant that brings serious character to any shelf or desk.
Despite looking like a high-maintenance showpiece, Peperomias are famously easy to care for. They have semi-succulent leaves that hold onto water, meaning they are incredibly forgiving if you forget about them for a week or two. It is the perfect compact plant for a busy flat!
How to keep it happy:
-
Light: Bright, indirect light is the sweet spot. It needs good light to keep those deep red colours vibrant, but direct, harsh sun will bleach and scorch the textured leaves.
-
Water: Treat it mean, keep it keen. Because of those thick leaves, it prefers to dry out mostly between waterings. If you are constantly hovering over it with a watering can, the stems will turn to mush. Let the top half of the soil completely dry out before giving it a drink.
-
Humidity: It is not overly fussy. Normal room humidity is absolutely fine, just keep it away from roasting hot radiators in the winter.
Troubleshooting:
-
Drooping, mushy stems? Put the watering can down! This is the classic sign of overwatering and root rot. Let it dry out completely before you even think about watering it again.
-
Fading foliage? If the rich red colours are starting to look a bit washed out or overly green, it is begging for a brighter spot.
Pet Safety: 100% Pet Safe. The Peperomia family is completely non-toxic, so you can safely place this moody little beauty wherever you like without worrying about your cats or dogs.
